  • Teen activist Greta Thunberg will donate all her $1.14 million prize money from the Gulbenkian Prize for Humanity for coronavirus fight and for other organizations involved in climate and ecological crisis.
  • The Brazilian organization involved in fighting the coronavirus in indigenous areas will receive $114,000
  • Another $100,000 will be donated to Stop Ecocide Foundation in support of their efforts to make ecocide an international crime.

Seventeen-year-old Swedish activist Greta Thunberg has just been awarded the Gulbenkian Prize for Humanity to the tune of $1.14 million. One hundred thousand euros ($114,000) of the prize money, she is donating to fund the fight against the coronavirus in the Amazon.

The Gulbenkian Prize for Humanity was given to Thunberg for the way she “has been able to mobilize younger generations for the cause of climate change and her tenacious struggle to alter a status quo that persists,” according to Jorge Sampaio, chairman of the Portuguese prize jury.

Fridays for Future Brazil which leads SOS Amazonia, will be the recipient of the $114,000 donation from the Thunberg Foundation as the group is assisting in combating the coronavirus pandemic in Brazil’s indigenous domains.

The Stop Ecocide Foundation will also receive 100,000 euros from Thunberg to “support their work to make ecocide an international crime.”

All her prize money will go to still-unnamed different organizations.

As what Thunberg said in a Twitter video, “The prize money, which is one million euros, that is more money than I can even begin to imagine, but all the prize money will be donated through my foundation to different organizations and projects who are working to help people on the front lines, affected by the climate crisis and ecological crisis, especially in the Global South.”

Thunberg added, “Also to help organizations and projects who are fighting for a sustainable world and who are fighting to defend nature and the natural world.”
