  • A K9 dog is the inspiration for an upcoming Netflix film called “Rescued by Ruby”.
  • Ruby was almost euthanized while living in a shelter.
  • She is now in her 11th year as a trooper for the Rhode Island State Police.

Ruby, the heroic dog, is going to become a movie star.

The life of the rescue dog is the inspiration for the new Netflix film Rescued by Ruby, which will be released on March 17. The film will chronicle the dog’s incredible journey from shelter pet on the verge of euthanasia to being a hero police K9.

Louise DuArt, one of the executive producers of Rescued by Ruby, told PEOPLE that they hope the movie will inspire people to adopt a shelter dog.

Bear and Shiloh, a pair adopted from a shelter by the film’s animal trainers, play the titular hero in Rescued by Ruby.

Ruby’s journey begins at the Rhode Island Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, where she was adopted five times before being returned due to her difficult behavior.

Fortunately, shelter volunteer Patricia Inman remained committed to Ruby, teaching her and attempting to find her the perfect forever home, preventing Ruby from being put down.

Corporal Dan O’Neil, then a Rhode Island State Trooper, was looking for a dog to train for a position on the Rhode Island State Police K9 Unit and found Ruby in 2011.

Ruby was the first shelter dog to be adopted and assigned to the Rhode Island State Police, according to O’Neil.

Ruby began to thrive, thanks to O’Neil and Inman’s faith in her. After a year of training, Ruby passed a human remains detecting class “with flying colors,” according to her partner. She then went on to pass a search and rescue class shortly after. Ruby joined the Rhode Island State Police in 2012 as a trained state trooper.

“It was quite a feat because this is the dog that wouldn’t even sit for five seconds. To pass the test, I had to have her minimally sit for five minutes,” said O’Neil.

In 2017, the Gloucester Police Department in Rhode Island contacted O’Neil for aid in locating a missing boy who had been missing for more than 36 hours.

Ruby found the missing boy after six hours of searching and waited by his side with O’Neil until rescuers arrived to take the child to the hospital.

Ruby and O’Neil saw the boy’s family once he was on his way to safety and were stunned to learn that Inman, the shelter volunteer who never gave up on Ruby, was the missing boy’s mother.

O’Neil said both he and Iman started to cry when they realized what happened. Ruby was able to recognize Inman even after six years, according to O’Neil.

Rescued by Ruby delves into this heartwarming story and shows what a rescue dog can accomplish when given the chance to shine. Ruby is still shining brightly in her 11th year as a Rhode Island State Police trooper.
