Colorado search dog rescued a missing girl in a Wyoming desert

  • Twelve-year-old Briana Weinert has been missing for several hours so police decided to get help from a search dog.
  • Jessie, a 6-year-gold bloodhound, helped in finding the pre-teen in the nearly 90-degree heat in Wyoming desert.
  • The dog was able to find little Brianna — a little sunburned and dehydrated but definitely okay.

Brianna Weinert, a 12-year-old girl, from Wyoming, was said to have left her parent’s house around 9:30 p.m. local time on July 1 and had been missing for several hours.

Luckily, Jessie — a 6-year-old bloodhound from Colorado’s Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office — and her handler, Deputy Kelly Fosler, were in Wyoming for an unrelated business when they received the call for help on July 2, police said. Authorities then called in Jessie for help.

“It turned out they were in the right place at the right time,” Jefferson County authorities wrote in a Facebook post. “Diverted from their trip home for a request to assist in the search for a missing 12-year-old.”

Jessie and Deputy Fosler went their way to find the missing kid in 90-degree weather and a “cactus dense area.” In spite of the cooling vest she was wearing, the search dog still needed a 20-minute break from the search. But Jessie was determined to find the missing girl.

After about two hours into the search, Jessie was able to find Brianna hiding near a large bush.

“When she was found; she was just sunburned and dehydrated, not severely but she was out in the elements for a little while,” Mike Taplin, a spokesperson for the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office, tells PEOPLE.

“When Deputy Fosler found her she gave her some water and let her feed her dog some treats, and then got her to the sheriff who returned her to her family,” Taplin continued.

The Colorado office posted a photo of both Jessie and Deputy Fosler side by side each other smiling.

“We’re thankful this young girl is going to be OK, and we’re thankful Deputy Fosler and K9 Jessie were in Wyoming and able to respond to help another agency and this family,” authorities said in the Facebook post.

“I found a missing 12 year old!” the Jessie’s post read. “She had been gone for 19 hours, and was sunburnt when I found her but ok.”
