  • Claude Debussy, iconic French composer, was born 163 years ago.

Althea Gibson made history 75 years ago when she became the first Black competitor in international tennis. At 23, she was invited to the National Championships (now the US Open) after persistent advocacy opened the doors for her dream.

Growing up in Harlem after her family left South Carolina, neighbors rallied together to fund Althea’s tennis lessons, setting her on the path to greatness. In 1956, she became the first person of color to win a Grand Slam at the French Open and went on to earn 11 Grand Slam titles in her storied career.

Congregation Shearith Israel was founded in New York 371 years ago by Jacob Barsimson and a group of Jewish immigrants, establishing a vibrant legacy in the city. This synagogue has been a cornerstone of culture, producing leaders like Supreme Court Justice Benjamin Cardozo.

Claude Debussy, born 163 years ago, dazzled the world with innovative music. Masterpieces like Clair de lune capture the serenity and imagination of his style, which drew from diverse influences and natural beauty.

“I have made mysterious Nature my religion… When I gaze at a sunset sky and spend hours contemplating its marvelous ever-changing beauty, an extraordinary emotion overwhelms me.”
