When country singer Andy Grammer heard of a mother with breast cancer, he wrote a special song for her and her son. The 35-year-old singer with hit songs like “Keep Your Head Up” and “Honey, I’m Good” lost his own mother to breast cancer in 2009.
Ellie was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2012, but she was determined to fight the disease so she could continue to care for her young son Jalen. Sadly, after battling cancer for several years she was also diagnosed with a brain tumor.
The 5-year-old boy was devastated when he found out about his mother’s imminent passing. Justin decided to surprise Ellie and Jalen by inviting Andy to meet them. The mother and son both love the music of Andy Grammer.
The song is titled “Ellie.”
“I wrote you a song. Because I lost my mom too. This is a song for when you really miss her a lot, you should sing this one,” Andy told Jalen.
Before the end of the song, Jalen snuggled up to the singer so that he could check the lyrics and sing along. Ellie laughed a little as she watched her son get goofy with Andy.
No one in the room had dry eyes as they listened to Andy’s sweet song. The singer told the boy afterward, “We’re friends now, okay? That’s how this works. So if you ever get sad and the song that I wrote doesn’t work, just give me a call and we can talk about it.”
Ellie was very grateful to Andy.
“There’s no words, honestly, so thank you. That was amazing. That’s something that he has forever.”
Shortly after the video was recorded, Ellie passed away, but her memory lives on in Jalen.
