- Shalita Addison was using a 1997 Honda Accord which fails to start a lot and made her miss work and appointments.
- Thanks to Melo and Gettacar, she now owns a 2017 Mazda CX3.
NBA All-Star Carmelo Anthony of Portland Trail Blazers gave a single mom perhaps one of the greatest surprises in her life.
The basketball veteran teamed-up with the company Gettacar based in Maryland to give Shalita Addison a 2017 Mazda CX3. Shalita is from Baltimore, Maryland and her daughter, Taylor Addison, attends Mount St. Mary’s University as a D1 basketball scholar, according to WMAR.
Shalita used to have difficult times with her old car 1997 Honda Accord which has caused her to miss work and other appointments because it often fails to start.
Melo worked with Gettacar to get Shalita a new car.
Taylor already knew of the plan earlier and helped persuade her mother into the parking lot of her school where her new Mazda was parked. The surprise overwhelmed Shalita, making her cry.

“I’m so grateful,” she told reporters. “Sometimes you don’t think that prayer works, but raising (my daughter alone) and then she gets a D1 scholarship, just the odds of that…it makes you just keep pursuing your dreams.”
For Taylor, it was really a difficult secret to keep but also an exciting one.
“I’m so happy for her,” Taylor said. “She was actually crying about it last night, talking about how she wanted a new car. I was like, ‘In 10 years we’re going to laugh about this.'”
Melo told NBC Sports that he is happy to have made a wish come true.
“We made a family happy, made some wishes come true,” he said. “It’s a great feeling when you can do something like that and help a family out. It always put things in perspective when you see the impact that has on people.”
