Breath Test Offers Hope for Pancreatic Cancer Detection
Quick Smiles:
- New breath test aims to detect pancreatic cancer early and easily.
- National UK trial will involve 6,000 patients at 40 locations.
- Experts say this innovation could revolutionize cancer care.
A quick breath test for pancreatic cancer is being trialed across the UK, with hopes of transforming the way this hard-to-diagnose disease is found.
More than 60% of UK pancreatic cancer cases are detected at advanced stages, leading to a high mortality rate.
This new device, developed by Imperial College London and Pancreatic Cancer UK, searches for volatile organic compounds in breath that can point to pancreatic cancer even in its early stages.
The ongoing trial will collect samples from thousands of patients to help researchers refine this pioneering approach and provide real-world data.
“The breath test has the potential to revolutionize the early detection of pancreatic cancer. It is, undoubtedly, the most significant step toward a lifesaving breakthrough in 50 years,” said Diana Jupp, chief executive of Pancreatic Cancer UK.
She added, “Thousands of patients with an unknown diagnosis will now help refine it in the real-world.”
Jupp also highlighted, “This is the first pancreatic cancer breath test to ever reach a national clinical trial of this scale. That in itself makes this a moment of real, tangible hope.”
This remarkable advancement brings optimism to patients and families, lighting the way toward earlier diagnosis and better outcomes in the future.
