Crow Returns Kind Gesture to Fellow Mom

  • Anne slowly developed a familiarity with the crow living on the tree across from her house.
  • One day, she rescued the crow’s chick from a cat and returned her to the safety of her nest.
  • The crow took notice, and returned the favor by keeping Anne company when her son was sick.

Anne Edwards noticed a new neighbor moving in across the street from her Scotland home five years ago. The crow has since become so familiar to Anne that she decided to name her Mildred.

Their bond grew deeper after an incident one day.

Anne was at home when she heard a commotion coming from outside. Rushing out, she spotted Mildred and one of her fledgling chicks perched on the fence around her house. She then noticed that a cat was nearby — and it was getting ready to pounce.

Anne acted quickly and scooped up the baby crow. She then returned it to Mildred’s nest in the tall tree across the road.

She soon realized that Mildred remembered her act of kindness.

When Anne’s son fell ill and had to be rushed to the hospital last week, Mildred seemed to sense her distress.

“When I came home from the hospital [that night], I heard Mildred cawing really loudly outside my bedroom window. I went outside, and Mildred was sitting on a bare tree,” Anne shared.

Anne said it was very unusual behavior for Mildred, since her densely covered home tree offers protection from the elements. But the crow chose to stay near her to offer her comfort.

Perhaps she wanted to let Anne know that she wasn’t alone.

Mildred stayed near Anne’s bedroom window all night, as well as the following night.

Anne indeed found comfort in Mildred’s gentle presence.

She shared, “We are both mothers. And just as I’ve cared for her chicks, she was looking out for my family whilst my son was in [the] hospital.”

Anne finally felt relief when her son’s health improved on his third day at the hospital.

When he was released from the hospital and returned home, Mildred seemed to sense Anne’s relief.

Anne shared, “As soon as my son was home, she returned to her normal roosting place.”

When Anne sent out her thanks to “everyone who sent their loving well wishes,” she included her “friend Mildred, who looks out for us from the skies.”
