This family from South Carolina is surely filled with pride as they celebrate the graduation of both Brandon Gathers and his father, Antonio, on the same day.
The inspiring pair graduated from South Carolina State University on Friday and marched across the commencement ceremony stage within moments of each other.
According to an ABC 4 report, 23-year-old Brandon received his bachelor’s degree in Business Management while 49-year-old Antonio received his master’s degree in Rehabilitation Counseling. While Brandon attended his classes at the campus, Antonio took his classes online.
Completing this milestone involves a lot of hard work, but the pair had each other as a source of motivation.
When asked about his father, Brandon proudly told the news station, “He’s a God-fearing man, he’s successful, he’s intelligent, he knows what he’s doing. He is just a great person in general.”
Meanwhile, Antonio shared how his son’s determination encouraged him to pursue higher education: “He was an inspiration to me, just seeing his perseverance. Doing other things, and having a full-time career, you kind of put yourself on the back burner. And it was just really important to me to get his degree to pursue another avenue in my life and in my career so that I could help people.”
The two men received their degrees together on Friday evening at Oliver C. Dawson Stadium.
Antonio told WAFB, “It is so real right now. Because as he aforestated, I never would have thought that this day would be here, that we would be graduating together.”
Regarding his master’s degree, he professed that “It’s a little late in life,” but this journey gave him a unique experience with his son.
Brandon shared with WAFB, “He’s like my inspiration. He is the perfect model of a black male father figure.”
Antonio and Brandon’s story is a testimony on just how much inspiration family members can provide for each other.
