Quick Smiles:

  • First-ever gene therapy helps patients with previously untreatable T-cell leukaemia.
  • Seven out of eleven treated remain disease-free years after therapy.
  • Teen pioneer inspired to pursue science after recovery.

Innovative gene therapy has transformed white blood cells into powerful living medicine, successfully reversing difficult blood cancers once considered incurable. Research teams at Great Ormond Street Hospital and King’s College Hospital achieved deep remission in most of the eleven patients, offering new hope to those facing T-cell leukaemia.

Seven individuals remain disease-free three years post-treatment, a remarkable achievement enabled by genetically editing donor T-cells to safely target cancer cells. This advanced base-editing technique, developed with University College London, takes gene therapy further than ever before.

“A few years ago this would have been science fiction,”

said UCL’s Prof Waseem Qasim.

“Now we can take white blood cells from a healthy donor and change a single letter of DNA code in those cells and give them back to patients to try to tackle this hard-to-treat leukaemia.”

Thirteen-year-old Alyssa Tapley was the first to receive this pioneering treatment after all standard therapies failed, and years later she is enjoying life cancer-free. Many children with T-cell leukaemia respond to standard care, but for the 20% who do not, there is now hope for a brighter future thanks to this breakthrough.

Dr Rob Chiesa from GOSH emphasized the importance of new options for those facing aggressive forms of blood cancer. The inspiring Alyssa, now 16, has set her sights on a future in research to help others overcoming similar challenges.

“I’ve now been able to do some things I thought earlier in my life would be impossible,”

shared Alyssa, looking ahead with determination and gratitude.
