Grizzly Bear Cub Becomes Lonely Polar Bear Cub’s New BFF
- When Laerke returned after being treated at the zoo’s health complex, she was no longer recognized by her mom.
- She was left alone until a new companion arrived.
- Jebbie, a grizzly bear cub rescued from Alaska, instantly became her new best friend!
Laerke the polar bear cub was born in November 2020 in the Detroit Zoo, along with several of her siblings. When she was only days old, she increasingly grew weaker, so she was treated at the zoo’s health complex. When she returned, her mom Suka no longer recognized her.
Laerke was left alone — until she found a new companion.
The Alaska Department of Fish and Game found Jebbie the grizzly bear cub wandering alone, and had him transferred to the Detroit Zoo.
Jebbie was quarantined and checked on by the Detroit Zoological Society (DZS) veterinarians before he was moved to the Arctic Ring of Life polar bear building.
It was there that he and Laerke got to know each other — and instantly became the best of friends.
The pair love playing together, splashing around in the pools, and wrestling in the grass.
Detroit Zoo: Jebbie and LaerkeAn un-bear-ably cute update from your Detroit Zoo: With two rocky beginnings, it’s a true silver lining. A young grizzly cub was found wandering alone in an Alaska neighborhood. Cubs normally spend up to three years with their mothers and the Alaska Department of Fish & Game believed he would not survive on his own. At the Detroit Zoo, hand-reared polar bear cub Laerke was in need of a companion. Laerke and her sister Astra were born in November. Two days after their births, Laerke appeared weak and stopped moving. Animal care staff provided lifesaving care for months. With the amount of time away, it became clear that returning Laerke to her mother and sister was not an option. Jebbie came to the Zoo in July and was gradually introduced to Laerke. The cubs now do nearly everything together — running, chasing each other, wrestling, rolling around and lots of typical bear play. We’re thrilled that Jebbie found sanctuary and Laerke now has a much-needed companion. Starting today, you can see the pair grow together at the Arctic Ring of Life habitat. As with many animals at the Detroit Zoo, Laerke and Jebbie are able to choose where they like to spend their time and may not always be visible outdoors. “We’re thrilled that we are able to give Jebbie sanctuary and provide a much-needed companion for Laerke,” said DZS chief life sciences officer Scott Carter.
This social development is certainly important for the cubs, which makes us happy that they have each other to grow up with.
You can check out these adorable cubs in action when you visit their exhibit at Detroit Zoo.
