Hero Dog Freyja Leads Search to Safe Rescue

A volunteer and his devoted seven-year-old German shepherd, named after a goddess, saved a missing two-year-old girl as temperatures dropped rapidly in Dorchester, New Hampshire.

Dozens of volunteers and officials from surrounding areas responded immediately after the mother reported her daughter and family dogs missing, searching dense woods where visibility was limited.

“Everybody dropped what they were doing and came over extremely quickly knowing the temperature was dropping,” Sgt. Christopher McKee of New Hampshire Fish and Game said.

Jeremy Corson traveled nearly 40 miles to assist with Freyja, his experienced scent-tracking partner, marking his 13th year volunteering for search and rescue missions.

As night approached, the family dogs reappeared at home, raising concern for the toddler’s safety, but giving rescuers hope they were searching near the right area.

“The dog and the handler are very much a team,” Corson explained. “We do the human part of it… and the dog provides the nose … she brought us right into it.”

Near 8 p.m., Freyja followed her nose and Corson heard a voice answer his calls—the toddler, mistaking Corson for her dad, was overjoyed to see them.

The child’s mother was overwhelmed with relief, while rescuers celebrated the happy outcome; the girl was later checked for hypothermia as a precaution.

Corson proudly rewarded Freyja with a new ball, and the inspiring team received an outpouring of praise for their incredible partnership and rescue effort.
