Miracle dog makes full recovery after getting thrown down 22-story garbage chute
- Ten years ago, a maintenance worker found a horribly emaciated dog in a bag thrown from a garbage chute that was 22 stories high.
- With the help of vet clinic staff and donations, the poor dog miraculously survived, reached full health after several months, and got adopted.
- Ten years later, Patrick the miracle dog is a healthy and happy dog with a loving family.
Back in 2011, a maintenance worker was sorting out the trash from a building’s garbage chute. As he was about to put some into a trash compactor, he noticed movement in one of the bags. When he checked it, he was horrified to find a badly emaciated dog who was barely breathing.
They learned that his owner had abandoned him, leaving him to starve, before throwing him down a garbage chute that was 22 stories high.
Thankfully, the worker found him and brought him to Garden State Veterinary Services in Newark, New Jersey. The staffers weren’t sure if he would even survive the night, but they worked hard to nurse him back to health.
The poor dog miraculously survived, but he was still far from healthy. His body temperature was so low that it didn’t even register on the thermometer, and he weighed only nineteen pounds.
Everyone worked hard to help him and people from all over sent donations and well wishes.
Slowly but surely, he got better, put on weight, and grew his fur back. He started looking like a normal dog again! As he put his worst days behind him, his playful self emerged.
The hospital’s administrator, Patricia Smillie-Scavelli, adopted him.
Patricia shared that the pup had a habit of crawling under her feet at her desk. Everyone could see that he was very close to her, and she realized that she just had to adopt him.
He was named Patrick since he was rescued on St. Patrick’s Day.
Patrick finally reached full health about a year later. After several more years, he looks even more beautiful.
His former owner was rightfully charged with neglect and abandonment. His story also became well-known in news outlets and online, where he was called ‘Patrick the Miracle Dog.’
Patricia said that Patrick’s story touched many people, so she created a Facebook page for the pup so that everyone can follow his recovery.
On March 17, 2021, 10 years after Patrick’s rescue, Patricia shared a photo to commemorate the anniversary of his “rebirth.”
Patrick celebrates his 10 year rebirth day with his new roommate Daisy, another rescue from Newark. Can you all believe…Posted by The Patrick Miracle on Wednesday, March 17, 2021
What Patrick went through is indescribable, but thanks to the kind people who found him, rescued him, and cared for him unconditionally, he is now a healthy and happy dog with a loving family.
