Puffin Adventure: Lovely Oona’s Heartwarming Rescue and Recovery

Quick Smiles:
- A puffin named Lovely Oona found herself 100 miles from home and was rescued by a kind homeowner.
- Veterinarians at a local animal clinic nursed Oona back to health with a specialized diet.
- Oona is set to return to her coastal home once she fully recovers.
In an extraordinary tale of avian adventure, a puffin was discovered far from its seaside home, stranded in a garden in Hereford, England. This landlocked location is over 100 miles from the bird’s natural habitat on the cliffs of Skomer or nearby islands in Pembrokeshire, Wales.
The puffin, affectionately named Lovely Oona by the veterinary team, was found by a compassionate homeowner who promptly took her to a local animal clinic. Dr. Elliot Goodwin, the head surgeon, shared, “We were surprised, to say the least. Puffins never venture this far inland unless they’re disoriented or have been blown off course.”
Oona was in a weakened state when she arrived, suffering from exhaustion and being underweight. The veterinary team rallied to provide care, feeding her a specialized formula suited for fish-eating birds. Dr. Goodwin noted, “It’s likely she was returning to her nesting site in West Wales and lost her way. Although she is not injured she is very tired from her inland holiday.”
As part of her recovery, Oona has recently begun eating solid food. The veterinary office reached out for help sourcing specific small fish, and their call was answered by a generous individual who provided frozen sprats. “We are over the moon,” they updated on social media, celebrating Oona’s successful consumption of the fish.
Dr. Goodwin praised the collective effort of the team, saying, “It was a full team effort, from diagnosis to feeding and nutrition, everyone brought their expertise to the table.” Despite their experience with exotic animals, including lynx and meerkats, this was their first encounter with a puffin.
Oona’s story serves as a reminder of the unpredictable journeys wildlife can undertake. Residents are encouraged to remain vigilant for other puffins that may have strayed from their path, as these birds typically travel in small groups.
Puffins, with their distinctive colorful beaks, are often smaller than people expect, weighing under a pound. Oona weighed just 218 grams upon her rescue, significantly less than the healthy weight of 400 grams. Dr. Sasha Norris from a local wildlife rescue organization highlighted the rarity of such rescues, noting that seabirds blown off course often don’t survive.
As Oona recuperates, her story is a beacon of hope and a testament to the power of community and compassion. Once she regains her strength, she will be released back to the wild, ready to rejoin her coastal companions.
