Robert Downey Jr. creates a foundation that will use nanotech and robots to clean up the planet

  • Robert Downey Jr. announced the creation of his new foundation.
  • The organization will focus on cleaning up the environment with the help of nanotechnology and robotics.
  • Downey Jr. says that once his foundation can get to work, they can do some significant, if not entire, clean-up of the planet “within a decade.”

Robert Downey Jr. is best known for playing the iconic role of Iron Man (Tony Stark) — tech genius, billionaire, playboy, and philanthropist.

Downey Jr. may be adding the title of “robotics environmentalist” to his own list with his new goal of cleaning up the planet with the use of nanotechnology and robotics. The Hollywood actor made the announcement of the birth of his new foundation with this focus earlier this week on the stage of the Amazon re: MARS (Machine learning, Automation, Robotics and Space) conference held in Las Vegas.

Though Downey Jr. didn’t give many specifics and details about how his organization would move forward with its clean-up mission, right after his announcement, a Footprint Coalition website went live. It seems to be the bare bones, for now, featuring only a sign-up sheet for updates and future newsletters. Still, the actor says that he will be working with UN experts for the following 11 months to get the coalition to start working on its goal by April 2020.

The actor explains that it was his past neglect of the environment that has now pushed him to take action. “I have this quiet sense of crisis. I’m a one-man carbon footprint nightmare colossus … [but] I want to change.”

According to Downey Jr. “between robotics and nanotechnology, we could probably clean up the planet significantly, if not entirely, within a decade.”

Downey Jr. also announced a new YouTube Red documentary series focusing on the wonders of AI. He and his wife will be working as executive producers, and of course, the actor will be narrating too.
