On their farms, thorough sampling revealed an impressive 23,833 worms, a sign of healthy, flourishing soil. Their ongoing five-year testing aims to give farmers valuable insights into crop rotations and grazing, strengthening decisions for both climate and community.

“That gave us loads of encouraging indicators – including 23,833 worms! –about different farming practices, but it also said that we need to go bigger, we need to go further, we need to go longer term,” says Tom White, regenerative farming manager at Yeo Valley Organic.

By nurturing the land with cover crops, diverse species, and grazing animals, farmers are seeing benefits from increased carbon capture to better water quality. This approach not only restores soil but also supports vibrant ecosystems and local resilience, even in challenging weather.

Sophie Alexander, a Yeo Valley supplier, highlights the importance of exploring best practices: “The temptation is to oversimplify, but it’s so complex: you’re dealing with life in all its permutations. The same technique does not suit every farm, it does not suit every soil.”
