Quick Smiles:

  • 18th-century painting of Saint Francis recovered after two decades missing
  • Returned to its original church near Teotihuacan, uplifting the local community
  • Art Loss Register and diligent auction house efforts led to the heartwarming reunion

Seven years ago, a Mexican auction house submitted its catalogue to a stolen art database, a routine step that unlocked an extraordinary discovery. One listing, a six-foot-tall portrait of Saint Francis of Assisi from the 18th century, matched a piece reported stolen over 15 years earlier from the San Francisco de Asis church near Teotihuacan.

The database, maintained by the Art Loss Register, traced the painting’s past, revealing falsified information and confirming its true origins after years of review. Padre Teodoro García Romero from the church welcomed the treasured artwork back, smiling with joy at the return.

“The recovery of our painting is of inexplicable significance to the faith of local people and restores part of the Teotihuacan community’s history,” said Father Romero.

Stolen in a 2001 nighttime burglary along with several miniature altar pieces, the painting finally found its way home, offering joy to the parish and community members alike. Painted by an unknown artist, it features Saint Francis holding a skull and crucifix, with a humble donor figure at his side.

Charlotte Chambers-Farah from the Art Loss Register shared, “With thefts targeting public institutions and churches on the rise, this recovery offers hope not only to individual victims but to whole communities as well.”

The tireless efforts of auctioneers and art recovery experts helped return a spiritual and historical treasure, inspiring hope in other communities longing for lost works to return. More lost masterpieces around the world are being found and repatriated, showing that patience and collaboration can yield uplifting results.

If this story brightened your day, share it and help spread joy and optimism!
