Syrian Volunteers Bring Schools Back to Life

In Talbisseh, Syria, community volunteers are taking education into their own hands, rebuilding shattered schools to create safe, dignified spaces for local children. Their commitment is redefining recovery in a region still scarred by conflict.

Citizens are joining forces, using their professional skills to repair classrooms, install fixtures and bring essential resources back to the schools. Thanks to their efforts, learning environments are being transformed and hope is being restored for many families.

“Schools in my city were stripped of the most fundamental resources: windows, doors, desks and blackboards were missing,” says Nidal Al-Okaidi. “Many buildings carried scars from the bombardment they endured, and children on their first school days were sitting on the ground. We had to do something.”

Ahmed Issa Al-Juma’a, a carpenter, explains, “I felt a responsibility towards the children of my town.” He donates his time to fix up schools, ensuring doors and windows are returned and broken chairs are repaired.

Mustafa al-Daher, a blacksmith, adds his metalworking skills: “When they call me to fix a school, I go directly. I’ve never let them down.” He has restored eight schools and continues to help whenever called, even if it affects his private business.

For Abdul Monim Al-Moayni, “I always felt I was falling short. I wanted to serve my country, to give something, even if it was small.” He and his workers donate labor, motivated by seeing children, including his granddaughters, study in the rebuilt classrooms.

The campaign began at the start of the school year and has already raised over £75,000. With new desks and resources arriving, classrooms are becoming welcoming spaces again.

This ongoing work highlights the power of local action and the difference dedicated individuals can make, one classroom at a time.
