Kevin Eubanks of Jonesboro, Arkansas, had a stroke eight years ago that left him with permanent left-side paralysis. 

In many ways, he has fought his way back to a new normal, but simple actions like giving his grandchildren a huge embrace are still beyond him.

Emily Eubanks Sisco, Kevin’s daughter, is an adjunct professor at Arkansas State University who works with Occupational Therapy students. She challenged her occupational therapy students to come up with a solution for her father, and they delivered with flying colors!

On student, Erica Dexter, said:

“We just all came together and said that is so sad that he wants to hug and he can’t,” said “We’ve just got to do something about that.”

Emily’s students designed “The Hugger,” a fabric strap with Velcro fasteners that allows the wearer to lift their weaker arm using the strength of their strong arm. 

Kevin had been involved in its development, therefore it seemed only natural that he would give the invention its first real-world test run. As soon as Kevin put on the gadget and stretched his arm high enough to hold his grandson, he began to cry.

“I appreciate everything y’all have done,” an emotional Kevin said. “This is a dream of mine.”

HugAgain is the new name for the Hugger, and they hope to sell them soon. Emily is pleased to be able to exhibit the ability of occupational therapy to take “what may seem impossible and making it possible again.”
