Kashanna Legette, 38 weeks pregnant, felt her water break suddenly while napping in her Bronx apartment. Intense contractions hit fast, leaving no time to reach the hospital.

Her sister flagged down NYPD officers from the 42nd Precinct parked nearby. They rushed to help as Legette climbed onto a discarded couch by the sidewalk.

“It was either that or on the ground,” Legette says.

Officers surrounded her, coaching breaths and pushes while holding her hand. Neighbors cheered from windows and streetside.

“People were calling out ‘Congratulations!’” Legette recalls. “I’m like ‘Oh my gosh. Oh my gosh. Is this really happening right now?’ I was so embarrassed.”

Legette delivered a healthy 7-pound, 11-ounce baby girl right there.

“I was so relieved,” she says.

In the chilly February air, Officer Roddmy Remy swiftly removed his jacket to swaddle the newborn.

“That was a fast act,” Legette says. “We didn’t have any covers or anything. For him to give her his coat, that was a blessing. I appreciated that. He didn’t have to do that.”

Moved by his kindness, Legette named her daughter Zenovia Remy in his honor. The gesture renewed her appreciation for compassionate officers.

“It helped me realize there are good ones out there,” she says. “I’m not going to lie—it did change my perception.”

“I was in shock,” Remy said. “Probably the coolest thing that’s gonna happen in my career.”
