When people think of cute animals, they’d usually think of cats, dogs, and other pets. They usually wouldn’t consider farm or barn animals as cute, but they might be missing out! Some cows, goats, and sheep have a different kind of cuteness, too. And have you seen alpacas? Their fuzzy faces, doe eyes, and long lashes might just make you a fan!
Alpacas are llamas’ cousins, but they are visibly smaller. Adults grow up to a maximum of only 3 feet and 2 inches tall at the withers and weigh between 100 and 200 pounds. They can live up to 15 to 20 years, with the oldest documented alpaca living up to 27.
Scientists believe that they have been domesticated for over 6,000 years ago. The early Incas domesticated them for their fleece, which is naturally hypoallergenic since it does not contain the oil lanolin. Each alpaca produces between 5 to 10 pounds of fleece every year.
Hailing from South America, alpacas weren’t common in the U.S. until some were imported to North America in 1984. The Alpaca Owners Association now records about 250,000 alpacas in the U.S.
