When Dr. Perpetual Uke, who works at Birmingham City Hospital as a rheumatology consultant, contracted COVID-19 in March, she had to be placed in a critical care unit and put into a temporary coma. She was also pregnant at the same time, and during her medically induced coma period, she delivered twins!

On April 10, she gave birth to two preemie babies at 26 weeks. She was still in a deep state of unconsciousness then, and when she woke up two weeks later, she was “so confused,”  according to the BBC.

“When they showed me the pictures, they were so tiny, they didn’t look like human beings, I couldn’t believe they were mine,” she said.

The premature babies spent 116 days in the hospital to fully recover and they were getting stronger and better everyday.

“I had never wanted them to go through this difficult path at the start of their lives. They couldn’t see their mum for two weeks, which obviously made me very sad but, importantly, things had progressed well,” Dr. Uke said.

Matthew, her husband, told BBC in an interview, that he was so terrified as he waited for her to wake up.

“Every passing day I was hoping my wife was not among those who are dead,” he said. “We are a team, the idea she might not be there was really difficult to accept.”

But Dr. Uke did wake up and even gave birth to beautiful babies. Now she is a mother to 4 lovely children.
