Texans queue up in support of bakery slammed for Pride Month cookies

Confections, a local bakery in Lufkin, Texas, said that it would be selling cookies in time for Pride Month, in hopes to spread “more love, less hate.”

Instead of gaining support, the bakery faced controversy over the move. Confections said that after posting the rainbow cookies on Facebook, backlash came running over.

One was a cancelled order of five dozen cookies, cancelled only a day before delivery date, with a “very hateful message,” sister owners Dawn and Miranda said.

“Today has been hard. Really hard,” the shop wrote on Facebook on Thursday. “We lost a significant amount of followers because of a rainbow heart cookie we posted.”

“My heart is heavy. Honestly, I never thought a post that literally said more love less hate would result in this kind of backlash to a very small business that is struggling to stay afloat and spread a little cheer through baked goods. So. If you love our cookies, we will have an [overabundance] of them tomorrow. Hopefully tomorrow will be better,” the post continued.

Fortunately, that post turned out in Confections’ favor, harboring overflowing support from people. On Friday, the store was welcomed with a long line of customers waiting to be served.

“We’ve sold out. All this attention on our small business is very humbling… in the 11 years we’ve been open, we’ve never seen anything quite like this,” Dawn wrote on Facebook.

Messages from across the country came in, including one from Mark Cuban’s brother, Brian, who wanted to buy cookies to donate to LGBTQ charities and organizations.

“When things slow down a bit, let us know if shipping is possible. I’d like to support you,” Brian said, as reported by news station KYTX.

“If shipping isn’t possible, I’ll buy some by phone/email and you can donate my cookies to a local LGBTQ org or children’s charity,” Brian insisted.
