Woman finds a box with a newly born wild boar and makes it her own
- Dora Wei was surprised when she found a box with a newborn wild boar on her doorstep in September.
- Dora took her in and named her Yezhu.
- Now, Yezhu enjoys her time with her human and dog family who loves her as much.
No one is really prepared for anything.
This can be true — particularly for Dora Wei who is used to seeing exotic animals around her home in the Hill Country of Sri Lanka. But seeing a newborn wild boar in a box on her doorstep still left her stunned.
“My gardener found her near my house in the early morning [in September],” Dora told The Dodo. “She was only a few hours old. She had been separated from her mom and was looking very cold.”
Without a mom, the little animal wouldn’t survive on her own, and Dora knew this. So, she decided to be an instant wild boar momma.
Determined to keep her, Dora and her boyfriend asked around on how to take care of the young wild boar now named Yezhu. They made a tiny sleeping area in the living room for her and used hot water bottles to keep her warm.
“We read online that she would need to be fed every hour, so my boyfriend and I took turns sleeping in the living room with her for almost the first four weeks, feeding her every hour when she woke up and started crying,” she said.
Dora added that taking care of the baby wild boar felt “really like taking care of a baby” for her and her boyfriend.
The mom was worried at first whether Yezhu would fit in with her four dogs, but she still introduced her anyway. Surprisingly, the little pig had her own way to blend in.
“She would always want to be with them — especially the Labrador,” Dora said. “She would always want to follow him and lie down next to him or sit on him.”
“She’s really nice to all the dogs even though they do bark at her when she tries to steal their food,” Dora added. “She really thinks she is one of them.”
Soon enough, Yezhu starts doing everything with her dog siblings — from napping to playing with their toys to eating their food. And seeing them enjoying one another’s company was such a great feeling for Dora.
When Dora knew that Yezhu was blind in one eye, she and her boyfriend built her very own house in the garden, with a pool so she can cool off in hot days. At night, Yezhu stays inside with her human and dog family.
“It was during a really hard and depressing time with the lockdown situation in the whole country when we found her,” Dora said. “She really did make us closer, and our life is more positive when we’re taking care of her and seeing her grow up.”
