Sentimental attachment brings new mom back to her birthplace
What You Need To Know!
- A woman named Victoria Matthews gave birth to her first child, Emma, at the HCA Virginia Johnston-Willis Hospital, where she herself was born almost 30 years ago.
- Matthews said she chose to deliver her baby at the same hospital because of her sentimental attachment to the place, and rated the hospital staff’s bedside manner as “12/10”.
- Johnston-Willis Hospital has been in Richmond for over 100 years, but it moved to its current location in Chesterfield County in the early 1980s. Its obstetrics department opened in 1993 with a cutting-edge labor, delivery, recovery and postpartum (LDRP) model.
Victoria Matthews, the first baby born at HCA Virginia Johnston-Willis Hospital in Richmond almost 30 years ago, recently gave birth to her own baby at the same hospital.
Matthews chose to deliver her first child, Emma, at Johnston-Willis because of her emotional attachment to the place, saying “I don’t think I could have delivered anywhere else — it would have been like cheating on you guys [Johnston-Willis].” She also praised the hospital staff, giving them a “12/10 for bedside manner”.
Johnston-Willis Hospital, which has been in Richmond for over a century, opened its obstetrics department in 1993 with a labor, delivery, recovery and postpartum (LDRP) model that was cutting-edge at the time.
Carolyn Perrin, a labor and delivery nurse who has worked at the hospital for almost 30 years, recalled that it “got very, very busy, very, very quickly” because it was the first hospital in Chesterfield County at the time. Perrin attended Johnston-Willis Nursing School and was herself born at Johnston-Willis in 1954.
When Perrin heard that Matthews was due to deliver at the hospital where she was born, she called it “something special” and made sure to care for the plaque commemorating the hospital’s first birth.
Perrin said that the hospital appreciated when anyone chose them to have their baby, and wanted to give them the best experience they could have.
