  • Astro, a rescue pit bull, is living with his new family for about a year.
  • One day, his mom’s son had a medical emergency and he was with no one but Astro.
  • Astro’s quick thinking made him run fast to find some help outside, which saved the son’s life!

This pit bull, whose breed is vicious for most people, has saved his owner’s life.

Astro, a rescue pit bull, is now living with his new family in El Paso, Texas, for about a year now. At first, his family was unsure if they would keep him long, as they, too, were understandably “scared of pit bulls.” But the canine’s recent heroism has made the family realize that treating them well definitely changes their ‘nature.’

On April 14, one family member had a medical emergency, and no one was home but the pup. Fortunately, this seemingly-helpless situation had a turnaround — all thanks to Astro who immediately ran out for help, found a neighbor, and started barking and running around.

The brave dog’s signal made the neighbor realize that something could be wrong, and he was led to the distressed owner, arriving at Astro’s home in time to call 911.

“We know that the dog was even trying to climb into the ambulance with the owner, firefighters had to lure him into a vehicle for family members to come and pick him up, and without his help the patient might have never been found,” said Enrique Duenas-Aguilar, an El Paso Fire Department spokesperson.

The pup’s courage and instinct made his family proud of him, and his act of valor is definitely helping change the image of rescue animals, particularly pit bulls.

“We never thought in a million years he’d do something like that,” Astro’s mom, Bertha Martinez, said.

“He really set an example for dogs that look just like him,” said Ramon Herrera, the interim director for El Paso Animal Services. “Astro is definitely a pit bull, and that is one of the main breeds you find in many shelters.”

Bertha’s son is now recovering, and the family couldn’t thank Astro enough, but their TLC and treats for him absolutely made the pup happy. On top of these, Astro was recognized by El Paso Fire Department and El Paso Animal Services, who gave him an award along with his very own puppy cake!

“Not only was he a friend, but he was there to help when his owner needed him the most,” Ramon said.
