Mexico’s Federal Electricity Commission invests 30 billion pesos in ambitious solar expansions totaling 1.5 gigawatts of production and storage.

The flagship Puerto Peñasco project in Sonora will grow by 580 megawatts to 1 gigawatt, becoming Latin America’s largest solar farm.

Sonora basks in 300 to 350 days of sunshine annually, perfect for solar power.

All phases, including 30% battery storage, complete by 2028.

“We are delivering on a strategic objective: ensuring the country’s energy sovereignty through orderly, clean and sufficient planning,” said Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum.

Coahuila adds 556 megawatts at Rio Escondido (180 MW) and Carbón II (376 MW), each with 30% storage.

Three more projects advance in Durango, Quintana Roo, and Guanajuato via tripartite committees.

“We are working through tripartite technical committees to review the technical characteristics and the status of prior permitting for each project. This is a binding planning exercise that will allow for an orderly start to development,” explained Emilia Calleja, CFE CEO.

CFE partners with the Ministry of Energy and National Infrastructure Fund.
