Owners usually keep their socks out of their pets’ reach, but things work a bit differently in Aubrey the golden retriever’s world. This amusing furball was caught in a viral TikTok video offering a sock to her human for a very particular reason.

The escapade was documented on @pawbrey, a TikTok account dedicated to Aubrey’s adventures. The video shows Aubrey proudly dropping the sock onto a man who is lying down. The video’s text narration reveals a sweet motivation: she wants him to “do magic for her.” Excitedly, she sits up and eagerly anticipates the performance, all from the cozy confines of the owner’s bed.

The man, who is the boyfriend of Aubrey’s owner, accepts the offered sock and with a few dramatic hand movements, makes the sock disappear! Aubrey’s bewildered and mesmerized reaction as the sock vanishes right in front of her is priceless.

TikTok users have shared their amusement and admiration for Aubrey’s adorable reaction. “This guy is the real deal, he had me fooled too,” commented one user. Another added, “[She’s] flabbergasted!” and many more joined in expressing their disbelief and admiration for Aubrey’s adorable reaction.

One user captured the mood perfectly saying, “If you ever needed a visual representation of disbelief meets amazement; this is it.” A fourth user humorously pointed out that it’s unclear whether Aubrey understands the trick or not.

The video starts with the man hiding the sock behind his head and ends with Aubrey, snuffling suspiciously, circling his head. One user noticed and quipped, “She can smell it but believes it has disappeared!”

This is no surprise, given that canine noses boast over 100 million sensory receptor sites, according to VCA Animal Hospitals. Dogs’ keen sense of smell—1,000 to 10,000 times better than humans—enable them to detect even the most subtle of scents.

Canine behaviorist Renee Rhoades from R+Dogs provided further insights into why dogs sniff. She explains, “Providing opportunities for your dog to sniff is the most important aspect of going out on a walk with them…dogs see the world through their nose, and their bodies are biologically fulfilled through the act of sniffing.”
