Quick Smiles:

  • Beloved weatherman Al Roker left the “Today” set to serve his country as a juror
  • His playful “duty” joke and courthouse update left fans smiling and proud
  • Roker used his platform to celebrate civic duty and remind everyone that serving on a jury is a privilege, not a burden

During the September 28, 2026 broadcast of the “Today” show, longtime weatherman Al Roker quietly stepped away from the studio lights. Co-host Dylan Dryer smoothly took over, while Savannah Guthrie and Craig Melvin assured viewers that everything was perfectly fine.

“Al had to step out for just a little bit. He’ll be back tomorrow,” Craig Melvin told the audience with a reassuring smile.

Curiosity followed Al online, where he later posted a lighthearted video from outside the courthouse.

“Well, got out of the ‘Today’ show early because I’ve got jury duty. It’s everybody’s civic duty to do the duty,” he said with a grin.

In classic Al Roker fashion, he couldn’t resist a playful follow-up. “I said duty twice!” he laughed, standing in front of the building where he had reported for service.

Fans quickly flooded the comments with affection and admiration.

“Imagine someone looking into the Jury pool, and you are there especially on a stormy day,” one viewer wrote. “A national treasure.”

Later that afternoon, Al shared an update that turned his brief absence into a moment of gratitude and perspective.

“To update you, I got a postponement til December when work is a little less crazy. But I LOVE jury duty. I know I am fortunate that my company pays me while I’m serving in a jury. Not everyone has that luxury. Doing your civic duty should NOT be a hardship,” he shared warmly.
