American Bison Make Triumphant Illinois Return

Quick Smiles:
- Six bison reintroduced to Illinois prairie after 200 years
- Santee Sioux community celebrates homecoming with songs and drumming
- Bison expected to rejuvenate native grasslands
A herd of six American bison, evenly split between males and females, has been welcomed back to the Illinois prairie after two centuries away.
The event was marked by drumming, singing, and cheers as the Santee Sioux gathered at sunrise on Burlington Prairie Forest Preserve to witness this historic occasion.
“It’s different when you’re welcoming them back home. That’s their home, not mine,” said tribal elder Robert Wapahi.
The bison were released into a secure area to acclimate to their new surroundings, with plans for a larger fenced pasture in the spring. Conservationists hope their grazing will restore the prairie ecosystem.
“It’s really important and awesome to see another herd that is hitting the ground in a good way,” shared one event participant as the animals arrived to native songs.
The American Indian Center, together with Kane County Forest Preserve staff and a herd manager, will care for the bison on their new home.
Historically, bison played a crucial role in shaping North American grasslands. Their return, while small for now, signals hope for further prairie restoration.
Witnessing the joy of the Santee Sioux as the bison found their way onto the prairie highlights the deep importance of this return.

There are 7 coming off the trailer. Another suggestion why news is too frequently to be considered as approximate, or perhaps distorted, or prejudiced, or party influenced, etc.

Excellent! We need nature to heal this earth before it’s too late. Regeneration of the soil is so important.
