  • Animal control officers found a dog living inside a tipped-over trash can.
  • The dog, whom they named Oscar for his love of trash, is now in the care of the Lexington Humane Society.
  • He still needs and deserves a loving forever family who recognizes that he is, in fact, a treasure.

When officers from Kentucky’s Lexington-Fayette Animal Control responded to a call, they discovered that a pup had taken shelter inside a tipped-over trash can.

The officers noticed that the dog was sweet enough to greet them, but would immediately get back inside the trash can.

They later managed to coax the dog out so they can transfer him to a shelter.

We received a call last month for a dog who was hiding inside a trash can. When our officer arrived, this sweet but timid dog would come up to greet her but then dart right back to the trash can. Most stray dogs run back to their home when they are scared, but this cutie was perfectly content to stay inside the trash can which made him feel safe and warm. It took some time and lots of treats, but our officer finally gained his trust and he allowed her to take him to our facility. After no one came forward missing him, our officers decided his name should be “Oscar” after Oscar the Grouch. Oscar quickly became a staff favorite and we fostered him in our offices for a few days. During this time we thought it was funny he would “guard the trash” and get into the office trash cans! We decided to take him for a “day out” to his favorite place… sanitation! There he met a sanitation worker named Larry who let him get into his truck for a few photos. Oscar had such a great time! Oscar has now been transferred to our partner organization, the Lexington Humane Society where he is waiting to find a home.Posted by Lexington-Fayette Animal Care & Control on Monday, March 14, 2022

The dog still continued to climb into trash cans after being rescued.

His rescuers named him Oscar “solely from his love of trash because this guy is definitely not a grouch.”

They decided to set up a meet-and-greet with local sanitation workers, and Oscar had a blast!

His caretakers in the Lexington Humane Society have no idea how he came to seek shelter in a trash can, but they can promise that “he will never have to resort to living in a trash can again.”

Oscar is now under lots of care thanks to his rescuers, but he still needs and deserves a loving forever home.

Shelter staff described Oscar as “an affectionate boy who now LOVES attention and is eager to make new friends.”
