“It’s one of the most extraordinary gifts of personal philanthropy we’ve ever encountered,” shared Marguerite Oestreicher, executive director of the New Orleans Area Habitat for Humanity.

The beneficiaries of this generous gift are families like Shernita Green’s, who has faced a steep rise in her homeowner’s insurance, now costing an additional $800 per month.

With her job at Goodwill paying just $11 an hour, Green expressed her struggle, stating, “I’m not making that kind of money to afford my home.”

The dilemma is clear: “It’s like either you’re going to pay this 800 or this thousand towards your homeowner’s insurance or are you going to lose.”

Oestreicher highlighted the pressure these families face, noting that insurance rates have surged since Hurricane Ida.

This has led to an “extraordinary degree of anxiety” among homeowners, as they grapple with difficult choices.

“We’re seeing people doing without essential things like healthcare,” Oestreicher explained.

“They’re changing the way they eat. They are scrambling to figure out any other way to make extra money to make ends meet.”

The anonymous contribution will enable Habitat for Humanity homeowners in New Orleans to receive “counseling, strategic advice, and tools to navigate financial hurdles.”

Green, reflecting on this timely support, said, “I’m so proud of Habitat. I don’t want to lose my home. I have six more years to be the owner of the home.”
