Astronomers led by Matija Ćuk from SETI Institute have solved the puzzle of why Saturn’s moon Titan is larger than Mercury.

New simulations show an extra moon, possibly Hyperion’s precursor, smashed into Titan half a billion years ago, boosting its size and gravitational pull.

This chain reaction accounts for Saturn’s distinctive wobble and famous rings formed around 100 million years later.

“I propose that there was an extra moon about half a billion years ago that collided with Titan, that actually became part of Titan,” Ćuk told CNN about his research.

“From this event, Titan could have perturbed some of the inner moons into more collisions, which created the rings sometime later, maybe 100 million years ago.”

Experts including Professor William B. Hubbard and Cassini team member Carl Murray endorse the idea as highly probable and superior to prior theories.
