  • Scientists confirm Van Gogh captured a real July sky
  • Study validates the artist’s remarkable accuracy
  • Historical discovery brings new appreciation to beloved masterpiece

Art and science beautifully intersect in a fresh discovery about Vincent Van Gogh’s most beloved masterpiece. Researchers have confirmed that the swirling night sky in The Starry Night perfectly matches the actual heavens above Saint-Rémy-de-Provence in July 1889.

The painting has long been associated with a letter Van Gogh wrote to his brother Theo in June of that year. Yet new astronomical analysis reveals the specific star positions and moon phase align precisely with the July sky, not June.

The study focused on the Hyades star cluster, which appears in the upper right portion of the painting. These stars, part of the Taurus constellation, were positioned exactly as Van Gogh depicted them during the waning gibbous moon phase of July 1889.

“This finding adds another layer of wonder to an already magnificent work,” says the research team behind the discovery. “Van Gogh’s keen observational skills allowed him to capture the cosmos with remarkable precision.”

The revelation deepens our appreciation for how the artist translated his observations into the swirling, emotional brushstrokes that continue to move millions of viewers today.
