  • Parliament’s 2025 law takes effect this week, creating safe havens for gliders, owls, and countless other species
  • Three new parks—Mount Buangor, Pyrenees, and Wombat-Lerderderg—represent one of Australia’s largest conservation victories

Australia has taken a remarkable step forward in wildlife conservation as more than 250 square miles of Victoria’s central forests officially become national parks this week.

Parliament passed the landmark legislation in November 2025, and the protections are now in full effect.

The new parks include Mount Buangor National Park, Pyrenees National Park, and the largest addition, Wombat-Lerderderg National Park.

These protected areas will provide vital habitat for greater gliders, powerful owls, and dozens of other native species that call these forests home.

Local conservation groups have celebrated the announcement as a major win for biodiversity and future generations.

“This is a once-in-a-generation opportunity to secure these precious landscapes,” a park spokesperson said.

The forests feature towering eucalyptus trees, crystal-clear streams, and rich undergrowth that support an incredible variety of wildlife.
