Beaver Builds Dam Inside His Foster Mom’s Living Room [Video]

• Rescued kit beaver cannot be released back to the wild for beaver families are fiercely tight knit.
• Rescue worker brought him home only to find out he had been stealing her things to build his dam.
• Justin Beaver or JB now has a pond at the shelter which he has not attempted to build a dam in yet.

Brigette Brouillard laughingly says, “He likes shoes. Shoes are great sticks to put in his dam.”

Beavers have tight knit family ties, once you are separated from your family, it would be difficult for them to take you back in. Or they would not welcome a stranger.  So, when the then kit beaver called “JB” or “Justin Beaver”, was found abandoned in the wild and brought to Second Chances Wildlife Center in Louisville, Kentucky, he was not released back into the wild.

He was fed and cared for at the center and rescue worker Brouillard brought him home.  

And it was not an easy job to raise a beaver indoors until he would be big enough to have a full enclosure.

They say you cannot take nature out of a wild animal no matter how you domesticate them.

JB was gnawing at the legs of Brouillard ‘s wooden furniture.  She even learned where some of her things went like the front doormat as the sneaky beaver stole them!  All because JB was building his “dam”.

Brouillard said, “I wasn’t sure, when he was moving things around, if he was building a dam. And I quickly learned that’s just what he was doing.”

JB was also using her bath tub for swimming.  But as he got bigger, a permanent solution had to be made.

That is when local “pond guy” Greg Wittstock, the owner of Aquascape, came into the picture.  He volunteered to build a pond at the shelter for JB. It had fresh running water, plenty of room and all the toys and soft blankets that JB needed.

But one thing that puzzles the people at the shelter is that JB has not attempted to build his dam in the new pond. 

No matter what his reasons are, Brigette and JB love to spend their time there at the new pond.
