  • A woman named Jennifer rescued a pair of dogs from a puppy farm and euthanasia.
  • One of the dogs, Beau, is blind and needed a “halo” to keep him from colliding with other animals, things and people.
  • Jennifer’s search for a halo led her to Samantha Hillstrom who fell in love with Beau and decided to adopt the blind dog.

After he and her brothers and sisters were not adopted from a puppy farm, Nelson the blind dog was scheduled to be euthanized.  A Good Samaritan named Jennifer rescued and fostered him and a sibling.

Being a first timer to taking care of a blind dog, she learned that Nelson would need “halos” or medium sized plastic rings to act as bumpers on their heads to avoid collisions with other animals, objects or persons.

She went on social media to look for a halo.

Fortunately, Samantha Hillstrom chanced upon her post.  Hillstrom had a halo.

Hillstrom said, “I had a blind dog as well, I said I would be happy to share tips with her on how to take care of one.” She added, “Jen and I sat on the phone Facetiming for hours, talking, getting to know each other. She was holding Nelson, now known as Beau and I was holding Finn and by the end of our conversation I just said ‘I have to apply for this dog.’”

Hillstrom thought Beau could provide companionship for Finn. And after six weeks, Beau came to live with Hillstrom and made friends with Finn.  Sadly, as if Finn knew his mom would now have a companion, he passed away 36 hours after Beau arrived.

In the days since Finn’s departure, Beau is now learning how to navigate his way around Hillstrom’s apartment and respond to her commands.

Hillstrom said, “If I were never Finn’s mom and I never learned how to take care of a blind dog, I never would have been able to take care of Beau.” She added, “It’s a tragic, heart-breaking story and I can’t believe my dog just died but I do believe these things happen as they’re supposed to and it is a wild part of the story.”
