Turin surgeons have accomplished a medical milestone that has families around the world celebrating. In an operation never attempted before, doctors transplanted a complete central retina—along with the cornea, sclera, and surrounding tissue—from one eye to the other in the same patient.

The woman, blinded years earlier in a car crash, opened her eyes to a world she thought she had lost. Within moments she could identify her son and her devoted dog, Joe, the loyal companion who never left her side.

“I could see my boy’s face and Joe’s wagging tail,” she said, her voice filled with wonder. “It felt like someone had switched the lights back on.”

“We knew the science was ready,” explained lead surgeon Professor Michele Reibaldi. “But seeing her smile when she recognized her family—that is the moment we live for.”

Colleagues at Ospedale Molinette say the technique could open new doors for patients whose sight has been taken by trauma or disease. For now, one family is simply grateful that the darkness has lifted.
