  • Aaron Wylie wanted to pay his family a visit, especially his mom with terminal liver disease.
  • With the travel restrictions due to the pandemic, Aaron sought for a delivery gig through a post and explained the situation.
  • Overwhelming help started pouring in, from trucking jobs, to financial help and even to an offer to undergo a liver test from a donor!

He’s willing to cross any boundary just to see his dying mom.

The coronavirus situation has taken a toll on everyone’s life, and in some other ways, has built walls around families — like in the case of Aaron Wylie.

Aaron, who lives in Halifax, Nova Scotia, has been longing to see his mom, Sandra, who has liver disease. Sandra lives with his dad in Saint John, New Brunswick, a four-hour drive away.

The last time Aaron got to see his family was on Christmas of 2019. Since then, he hadn’t paid them a visit given the pandemic’s travel restrictions, paired with budget and time constraints.

But Aaron could no longer allow any of these barriers to stop him from seeing his sick mom. He thought of a way and did not delay in working on it.

A bus driver for Halifax Transit in Nova Scotia, Aaron has a Class-1 license, which allows him to drive a truck. Aaron has seen this as a good and lawful idea to execute his plan, since truck drivers are classified as essential workers.

Aaron posted an ad on Canada’s popular classified network site Klijiji to seek a delivery gig to New Brunswick.

“I know this is a bit of an odd request but I’m looking for a class 1 position,” he wrote. “I have Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday off—I work full-time at Halifax Transit. I am looking for a route that will run Halifax to Saint John… I am willing to drive for free!”

The dedicated son also explained the reason behind the plan, and hoped that he could do it as soon as possible and by still following the protocols in place.

Aaron was surprised with how people responded to his post. Offers were piling up, one after another — from trucking jobs, to financial help, even to a potential liver donor who was willing to undergo the compatibility test!

He already received an offer to haul cars from Halifax to Saint John. Aaron didn’t waste a second to put up this plan. While still waiting for his clearance to travel, he worked on other things, got himself vaccinated and planned a COVID-19 test.

Aaron was humbled by the outpouring support he received, telling CBC News that he was just blown away. These are people I don’t even know.”
