  • Paul Jenkinson offers a listening ear to anyone, free of charge, across Canada.
  • His unique approach involves setting up two chairs and inviting people to talk.
  • Jenkinson’s journey is about creating connections and providing a safe space.

Paul Jenkinson, a former social worker from Canada, has found a delightful way to spend his retirement by offering a listening ear to anyone who needs it.

Drawing from his experience as a registered social worker and advocate for the elderly in Nova Scotia, Jenkinson is traveling across Canada, setting up two simple chairs and inviting people to share their stories.

Jenkinson likens his role to that of a “stranger on the airplane”—someone who listens without judgment or expectation.

“I’m there as a fellow human to make connections,” he shared.

His initiative, “I Will Listen,” isn’t a formal event but rather a spontaneous opportunity for people to talk about anything they choose.

Many people are intrigued by this older gentleman offering a listening ear, but it often takes them a few passes before they muster the courage to sit down.

“I think they’re curious, for sure. ‘Who is this older man?’” Jenkinson noted.

The conversations he has are as diverse as the people he meets.

While some individuals are students or those recovering from tough times, others simply want to share their achievements or good deeds.

Importantly, there are no restrictions on topics, no fees, and a commitment to confidentiality, unless someone expresses intentions to harm themselves or others.

Jenkinson, who describes himself as a transient with financial means, is currently in Nova Scotia and plans to continue his journey to Prince Edward Island, with hopes of reaching British Columbia by winter.

His mission is a testament to the power of listening and the connections that can be formed through simple acts of kindness.

I’m doing it, and I never thought it was possible until I found this online opportunity. The work is super easy, and you don’t need any prior experience—just a desire to succeed!
