In the midst of a record-breaking storm in Scotland, a 15-year-old Bengal cat named Cleo found herself in quite a predicament. The chaos of Atlantic Storm Eowyn, described by the UK Meteorological Office as a ‘sting jet,’ prompted Cleo to seek refuge through a tiny hole, leading her to become trapped underground.

The storm wreaked havoc across the UK, leaving thousands without power and bringing daily life to a standstill. Amidst this turmoil, residents of a Dundee apartment building were alerted to Cleo’s plight by her persistent cries.

Efforts to coax Cleo out using food, planks of wood, and rope proved unsuccessful. As Animal Rescue Officer Stephanie Smillie explained, “After several attempts to lure Cleo out with food, planks of wood, and rope, we quickly realized she didn’t have enough energy to climb out on her own.”

With options dwindling, the Scottish Fire and Rescue team stepped in to assist. Smillie recounted, “After carefully tearing up some floorboards, they discovered a tiny trap door leading into the foundations from the building’s kitchen. With their help, we were finally able to reach Cleo and free her.”

Once rescued, Cleo was understandably exhausted. However, with some much-needed cuddles, a hearty meal, and plenty of water, she was soon on the mend.

A brief moment of confusion arose when Cleo’s microchip indicated she belonged to a family in England. This was swiftly resolved when a local, who had been frantically searching for Cleo, arrived with the necessary ownership papers.

Cleo’s owner, Arlene Connor, expressed her relief and joy: “Cleo had been missing for four weeks and with the weather being so cold, I feared for the worst. We had posted missing appeals for Cleo on social media and were overjoyed to receive the phone call that she had been found.”
