  • With no time to take a shower, coal miner Michael McGuire watched a basketball game with his son at the University of Kentucky.
  • Someone took a photo of him which caught the attention of University of Kentucky Men’s Basketball Coach John Calipari.
  • Calipari gave him VIP tickets and restaurants, hotels and even a car dealership followed by offering him deals.

Not caring about how he looked as he came in straight from work, coal miner Michael McGuire enjoyed watching a basketball game with his son.  He was not bothered that he was dirty as he had no time to shower as he was in a hurry to get to Rupp Arena at the University of Kentucky.

He had no idea that a fellow fan snapped his photo and it went viral reaching University of Kentucky Men’s Basketball Coach John Calipari.

The coach said that the photo hit him “right between the eyes.” He tweeted the photo and wrote, “My family’s American dream started in a Clarksburg, WV coal mine, so this picture hits home.”

He then set out to reach McGuire to give the family VIP tickets.  Fortunately, he was able to get hold of McGuire’s wife, Mollie, who told him that McGuire is a great father and would go out of his way to be with his son to watch games.

And this started the ball rolling.  Calipari reached out to McGuire’s workplace where he was called to the office.

McGuire thought that he did something wrong but he was surprised to see that they were all cheering.

Calipari narrated that McGuire badly wanted to be there with his son at the game that “he was willing to leave without showering, without changing, just get in his car and go because he got out of the mine late.”

From the VIP tickets, hotels, restaurants and even a car dealership have offered a car to McGuire.

Calipari said, “Isn’t it neat for someone like that, who is a quiet, humble guy, to know people appreciate you, and we appreciate what you stand for?”

Thanks to one photo, one guy’s family has one bright future.
