Residents of Bend, Oregon will always remember October 15, 2026, as the day a brave father put the safety of children above his own. A 16-year-old opened fire at Silver Rail Elementary School, claiming the lives of three children and a teacher before the situation could worsen.
Kaylub Giamanco, a 36-year-old father of two, was heading back to work after lunch when he heard the gunfire and saw the gunman enter the building. With a concealed-carry permit, he rushed inside and stopped the shooter, preventing further tragedy.
“I believe God put the right man in the right spot at the right time. I don’t know anyone else who would have sprung into action like he did to save so many lives from a massacre,” Kaylub’s friend Dylan Costa told NBC News.
Though hailed as a hero, Kaylub has chosen to remain private while he processes the events. A GoFundMe page created by Amy Reynolds is helping the family with the emotional and financial challenges ahead.
“He acted out of love. Love for his daughters, love for the children inside that school and love for the community he has called home for most of his life,” Amy wrote. “Being brave does not mean being unaffected. Being a hero does not mean you don’t need help. Kaylub, his wife Kelsey, and their two young daughters have an incredibly difficult road ahead of them. The emotional and psychological impact of this tragedy cannot be overstated, and they deserve the time, space, and resources to begin healing together.”
“Thank you for protecting and saving the kids and school staff! As a father and a husband of a teacher, this is my worst nightmare. We are all so proud of you and the courage you showed and had! A real Hero!” A donor wrote.
“You did what any father would do in this scenario! Angels are real and there are billions surrounding us every day. You were in the right place at the right time. You did what you had to do. Don’t be upset by your actions. God will not punish you. You saved lives of innocent young angels, and we love you for that,” another person added.
Community members have already contributed more than $120,000 to support Kaylub and his family as they heal.
