Couple Decides to Keep All 15 Cats that Came with their Farmhouse [Video]
- When Emily and her boyfriend Dylan toured a farmhouse they were planning to buy, they noticed that it came with 15 barn cats.
- They decided to buy the farmhouse, keep all 15 cats, get them the care they needed, and earn their trust.
- The whole pack has since warmed up to them, and the couple even adopted a 16th cat!
Emily Bott and her boyfriend, Dylan Loewke, were touring an old farmhouse that they planned to buy when they noticed several cats in the front yard. It turned out that the property came with 15 barn cats!
They were definitely intrigued, but when they asked the realtor about it, they were told that the cats would be gone by the time they moved in.
Still, they wanted a shot at keeping them. So when their offer on the house was accepted, Dylan requested for the cats to stay.
“I was apprehensive at first only because I had never owned a cat before,” said Emily. “However, at the time, I worked at the local humane society and knew, at the very least, I could get them all spayed/neutered and even rehome them if absolutely needed.”
They received dry cat food from the previous owners, but that was about it.
All of them haven’t been spayed or neutered yet, and they had several health issues. So the couple made sure that all 15 cats receive the care they needed.
Their next mission was to earn their trust.
Only one cat, Valencia, was friendly at first. The couple calls her their “queen bee.” While some showed interest and curiosity, it took months and even years to get the others to trust them enough to let them approach or pet them.
“I spent many nights sitting in my driveway throwing treats at them, feeding them catnip, and engaging them with toys,” Emily shared.
Emily and Dylan soon gained the whole pack’s trust. While some are still uncomfortable being handled, they all love and trust their new human family. Some of them even follow the couple wherever they go.
Emily shared, “I would say living with so many barn cats has been a blessing. Every time I step outside, I’m greeted by them immediately. There’s a couple that will follow me almost everywhere on the property, and all of them will flock to me if I shake the treat bag. I have a whole crew that walks me down the driveway to get my mail. Valencia will even run down the driveway once she spots my car on our street.”
The couple has since adopted a 16th barn cat named Tofey. A life filled with barn cats also inspired them to plan to open an animal sanctuary in the future for other cats in need.
