For over 500 years, whispers of secret tunnels sketched by Leonardo da Vinci have intrigued historians and art enthusiasts alike. Now, Italian researchers have verified these tales, revealing hidden passageways beneath Milan’s Sforza Castle.

A team from the Polytechnic University of Milan employed cutting-edge technology, including radar and laser scanners, to explore the depths of the historic site. Their findings were astonishing.

“The results were far more significant and intriguing than we had anticipated,” shared Francesca Biolo, an architectural historian from the university.

The castle, which began construction in 1358, has a history marked by political turmoil and renovations. Da Vinci, known for his artistic prowess, was commissioned to adorn the walls, but his sketches of secret passages beneath the castle captured imaginations for centuries.

Biolo and her team were determined to unearth more of the castle’s secrets. Their persistence paid off.

Working alongside Sforza Castle authorities and Codevintec Italiana, the researchers used a combination of laser scanning, GPS, and 3D ground-penetrating radar. These efforts led to the discovery of a new passageway and several subterranean rooms, some just a foot or two below the surface.

“This passageway is immortalized in Leonardo’s drawings and has long been the subject of legends and considerable speculation,” a press release noted.

The newly uncovered tunnel, possibly used for defense, adds another layer to the intricate history of Sforza Castle. This discovery not only confirms the genius of Da Vinci but also invites further exploration into the depths of Renaissance history.
