Detroit’s Ancient Forest Celebrated as a National Treasure

Just a stone’s throw from the bustling city of Detroit lies a serene grove of trees that have stood tall for centuries, now basking in newfound respect and recognition.

The Old-Growth Forest Network, an organization committed to preserving ancient woodlands across the United States, has officially acknowledged 32 acres of this venerable forest.

Remarkably, this grove is nestled in Humburg Marsh, part of the Detroit River International Wildlife Refuge, and is located a mere 20 miles from downtown Detroit.

The Old-Growth Forest Network’s mission is to identify and protect at least one native forest in every U.S. county where such ecosystems can thrive. This ambitious goal encompasses approximately 75% of the nation’s counties.

The oaks in Humburg Marsh have miraculously escaped the clutches of urban development, flourishing undisturbed for hundreds of years.

“We know through historical records that the Humbug Marsh property has been relatively untouched for about 300 years,” said Alex Gilford, a park ranger at the Detroit River International Wildlife Refuge.

This recognition marks another triumph for a woodland area that has faced threats from development, which could have jeopardized its existence.

Back in 1998, a proposed development project endangered a mile of marshlands near the forest. However, the local community rallied together, with a thousand residents protesting to preserve this precious ecosystem.

Their collective efforts ensured that these magnificent trees would remain for future generations to admire and enjoy.

“It’s a special place,” Gilford shared. “The public can get up close and personal with ancient oak trees and be inspired by this protected natural gem…”

As of now, the Old-Growth Forest Network has designated 280 forests, including at least one old-growth forest in 39 states, with many states boasting multiple designations.

This initiative is supported by 7,400 passionate environmentalists, including hikers, forest managers, scientists, and everyday citizens. Anyone can nominate a forest for inclusion in this vital network.
