Dog missing for 5 years finally returns home [Video]
- Renee Perry lost her dog, Bay, five years ago after the pup escaped her enclosure at a pet sitter’s house.
- Renee searched everywhere but there was no sign of her, until the spring of 2021.
- A family was able to trap a white dog often visiting their yard and worked with a non-profit, who then brought Bay back home!
“It’s surreal.”
This was how Renee Perry felt when after half a decade, she was finally reunited with her dog.
Five years ago, Bay, an 18-month-old basenji mix, managed to escape her enclosure when she was left at a pet sitter’s house in Framingham, Massachusetts.
Tirelessly, Renee searched for her everywhere, but to no avail. She had no trace of where Bay was.
“There was never any sign of her,” Renee said. “We looked all summer. I always looked.”
Renee wanted to keep her hopes high that she would still find Bay, until every day seemed hopeless and the thought that she’d be back looked increasingly impossible — until the spring of 2021.
A family in Needham, 10 miles from Framingham, has noticed more dog waste in their backyard in the same time when Bay had gone missing. The camera they set up revealed that it was a white pup, who looked so well-fed that made them assume she was a neighbor’s pet.
Two years ago, the house owner noticed a missing dog poster and met with volunteer Danielle Matthew of Missing Dogs Massachusetts. He agreed with the non-profit’s idea to set up a cage trap in his yard so they could check if the white pup was the missing canine.
“We thought this had to be someone’s dog because she was so plump,” Danielle said. “Then we got closer and she was covered with ticks and she had dirty ears, really dirty all over the place.”
The dog they were able to trap wasn’t the missing dog in the poster, it was Bay!
The group was able to identify Bay’s owner with her microchip, leading to her reunion with fur mom Renee.
“I didn’t believe it at first,” she explained as her pup managed to gain weight despite the wandering years. “I saw the pictures, and it did look like her but her nose was darker; she just looked heavier; she just looked different.”
After realizing that the dog was really her Bay, Renee was so thrilled. “To get her back … I think it’s an understatement to say it’s a miracle because it’s just crazy. It’s surreal,” she said.
Bay was treated for her fleas and ticks, but besides these, she was in pretty good shape.
“I’m amazed she survived five New England winters,” Danielle said. “But yeah, a resilient little dog.”
