  • Elena adopted Myko, a rescue dog with anxiety, right upon seeing him online.
  • Myko is very sensitive and usually freaks out with noises.
  • Elena was able to train him to calm down with a costume, Eeyore ears, which Myko has been wearing not only during Halloween!

This family has found the most adorable way to help their dog get over his anxiety: a pair of “quiet ears.”

Myko, a rescue dog, has been battling his fears ever since he was a puppy.

“He had been rescued from a high-kill shelter in South Carolina, and prior to being at the shelter, there had been some kind of neglect,” Elena, Myko’s mom, told The Dodo.

The moment Elena and her husband saw him online, they knew he was special and never thought twice to adopt him. “It was love at first sight.”

“His little face on the screen with those enormous brown eyes instantly spoke to both of us, and we knew that we had to rescue him,” Elena added.

Knowing about his tough past, Elena noticed that Myko is very sensitive, despite having an amazing personality and being a happy dog in general. The pup usually freaks out with ceiling fans, fireworks, thunder, water and deer in the backyard. And when he is scared, Myko can bark for a very long period of time.

“We never quite know what we might run into that sets off a fear response,” Elena said. “Despite that, he is incredibly brave, smart and responsive to training — he has accomplished so much and moved beyond many of these challenges.”

It was not easy to calm Myko, but his parents were able to think out-of-the-box and discovered that the key to Myko’s composure is just inside their closet all along.

“We had read about how clothing that is form-fitting or pressure around their ears can be calming for dogs who are in a high state of arousal,” Elena said. “We had purchased an Eeyore Halloween costume for him a few months back, so we pulled out the droopy ears portion of it. We put them on him and he instantly became very quiet and calm.”

Myko knows what he needs to do every time he sees his Eeyore costume, which has since been his “quiet ears” and cue for relaxation. Whenever he sees his “quiet ears,” he’d instantly quiet down. More than this, he’s getting extra treats as he puts it on.

Elena is happy that they found a way to keep the pup calm down, but the fact that they have Myko, they knew they couldn’t be any happier!

“The way he expresses himself, his feelings, his thoughtful reactions to things, is so inspiring and a reminder that it’s OK to feel things and look for help when you need it,” Elena said. “The lessons we have learned from him about courage, second chances and kindness are endless.”
