A new mom named Brooke Thomo recently shared a sweet glimpse into her life with a newborn and a dog, and it’s far more serene than one might anticipate.
In a video posted by Brooke (@brookethomo), she is seen cradling her baby during a late-night feed. Her loyal dog, Cedar, a white border collie, quietly joins them, resting her head on Brooke’s arm and attentively watching over the scene.
Text on the video reads:
“When you think you’re the only tired one,”
highlighting the shared exhaustion of caring for a newborn. The caption further explains:
“Through the cluster feeding nights and early morning wake-ups, she’s been there too, quietly awake and waiting by my side.”
The touching video, filmed at 3 A.M., shows Cedar gently moving closer to sniff the baby, a moment that has left viewers in awe.
At the time of writing, the video has garnered 2.4 million likes and nearly 6,800 comments. One comment, which received 82,000 likes, states:
“Girl dogs and babies. It’s just something about them, like they want to be your child’s caretaker too.”
Another user remarked:
“It’s the checking on you before baby for me,”
referring to Cedar’s moment of looking into Brooke’s eyes before turning her attention to the baby.
One particularly poignant comment praised Brooke’s acknowledgment of Cedar:
“People often forget about their pets after having a baby, and as someone who was in vet med for 11 years, that’s absolutely destroys me. They will remain just as loyal and loving even if we waiver. So thank you for acknowledging that sweet fur baby of yours. I promise it means the world to her.”
Another comment with 96,400 likes observed:
“The way you looked kinda relieved to see her.”
Brooke responded:
“This was the first night at our house after the hardest hospital stay and seeing her really reminded me I was in fact, home.”
She also shared with another user that she was crying during the moment.
The American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (ASPCA) offers advice for new moms introducing their babies to pets. They recommend allowing others to enter the home first to help the dog release energy. Then, leash the dog and have treats ready. Parents should stay calm and speak cheerfully to avoid making the dog anxious, praising calm behavior and distracting the dog with treats.
For initial meetings, choose a quiet room, sit with the baby, and have a helper bring in the leashed dog. If the dog remains calm, allow brief interactions and praise gentle behavior. Keep these initial meetings short and sweet, rewarding the dog with treats and then distracting them with a toy.
