Meet Millie, a Jack Russell Terrier who loves sausages so much that a sausage ended up being her lifesaver.

Millie slipped off her leash last week and has been evading rescue efforts from police officers, firefighters and coastguards.

She ended up in a dangerous part of the mudflats of Hampshire, England, where the rising tides could drown her.

Desperate, the Denmead Drone Search and Rescue team came up with “a crazy idea.” What if they dangled meat from a drone to lure Millie?

The team chair, Chris Taylor, shared, “One of the local residents on the beach where we were flying from supplied us with the sausages. The woman cooked them up for us, and we attached them with string.”

The team couldn’t reach her by kayak or other means, so dangling the sausage was a “last resort.”

“If we hadn’t had got her away from that area, the tide would have come in, and she would have been at risk of drowning,” Chris explained.

Thanks to their unique but clever plan, Millie was safely reunited with her mom, Emma Oakes.

Emma told The Guardian, “Relief just poured over me. It was just absolutely fantastic to have her home.”

She added, “Millie really likes food, and she’ll eat anything you give her…raw carrots, cucumber — but she much prefers sausages. Meat is her favorite food, so dangling a sausage was probably the best thing they could lure her with.”

The sausage technique is now being considered as a future tool to rescue animals in the area.

Chris explained that search and rescue operations are usually resolved differently, but they would definitely consider using sausages again if they find themselves in a similar situation.
